Phase 1 — Foundation

Start here. Not with the tool.

5 min read  ·  Do this before you open Claude

Most people spend their first week with Claude doing one thing: asking it questions they could Google. They get mediocre output. They conclude AI isn't for them. This phase is why they're wrong — and what they skipped.

Step 1.1

What Claude actually is

Not a chatbot. Not a search engine. Claude is a thinking partner — one that reads, writes, analyses, and executes tasks you'd normally spend hours on.

You don't need to understand how it works. You need to understand what to give it.

The mental model that changes everything: Claude is a highly capable person who just walked into your business today. Smart. Fast. Ready to work. But they need context. The more you give them, the better the output.

Step 1.2

The time audit — find your first five jobs

Before you touch the tool, map the problem. Where are your hours actually going? Repetitive tasks. Information-heavy tasks. Writing tasks. Those are Claude's first jobs — not the creative decisions, not the relationship work, not the judgment calls. The grind.

Answer these three questions and write them down:

Question 1 — What takes you more than 2 hours a week that doesn't actually require you personally?
Question 2 — Where do you spend time writing things that follow a pattern — emails, reports, proposals, posts?
Question 3 — What information do you regularly process — reading, summarising, pulling key points from documents?

What you just wrote down is your AI roadmap. Every task you named is a candidate for Claude. You'll test them in Phase 2.

Step 1.3

Four things to know before you start

Know this

Claude forgets between conversations. Every new chat starts fresh. If context matters, paste it in at the start. Build this into your habit from day one.

Know this

Output quality follows input quality. A vague prompt gets a vague answer. A specific prompt with context gets work you can actually use.

Know this

You are the editor, not the passenger. Claude drafts. You decide. Never send, publish, or act on output you haven't read and approved.

Know this

Iteration is the process. First output rarely nails it. Ask Claude to revise, sharpen, or shift angle. That back-and-forth is the work.

Up next  ·  Phase 2
You've mapped the problem. Now it's time to run it.
That audit you just filled in? Those are your first jobs for Claude. Phase 2 is where the theory ends — and where most people get their first real result in under 30 minutes.

Phase 2 — First wins

Five tasks. This week.

5 min read  ·  Run one task from your audit all the way through

Your list is ready. Claude is open. This is the part where the abstract becomes real — and where most people are surprised by how fast the first result lands.

Step 2.1

The five tasks to hand Claude immediately

  • 1
Research and summarising Paste in a report, article, competitor website, or document. Ask Claude to pull the key points, find the gaps, or tell you what matters. What used to take 90 minutes takes 5.
  • 2
First drafts Give Claude the context, the recipient, the goal, and the key points. Let it draft. You edit. The blank page problem disappears.
  • 3
Editing and sharpening Paste in something you've already written. Ask Claude to tighten it, make it clearer, or adjust the tone. Faster than rereading it yourself three times.
  • 4
Sense-making from data Paste a spreadsheet or report. Ask questions in plain language — "What's the trend here?" "Where are we losing?" Claude reads the numbers. You make the call.
  • 5
Meeting and call prep Tell Claude who you're meeting and what you're trying to achieve. Get a briefing note, an agenda, and the three questions you should be asking — in under two minutes.
Step 2.2

How to write a prompt that actually works

Most people prompt Claude like a search engine. One line. Vague. Then they're disappointed. Claude works when you treat it like a capable person who just started — give it context, a role, a goal, and what good looks like.

Use this four-part structure every time:

R
Role — tell Claude who it is"You are a senior marketing strategist working with a professional services firm."
A
Action — tell Claude what to do"Write a follow-up email to a prospect who went quiet after our initial proposal."
C
Context — give it what it needs"The prospect is a CFO at a 200-person firm. 6-month consulting engagement. Tone: confident, not desperate."
E
Example — show it what good looks like"Here's an email I sent before that worked well: [paste it]. Match the voice."

You don't need all four every time. But the more you include, the less back-and-forth you need. Context is the multiplier.

Step 2.3

Your first 30 minutes with Claude

Don't explore. Execute. Pick one task from your audit. Run it all the way through.

  • 1
Open claude.ai Create a free account if you don't have one. You're one conversation away from your first result.
  • 2
Pick the most painful task from your audit Not the most interesting. The most time-consuming. That's where you'll feel the difference fastest.
  • 3
Use the RACE structure Write your prompt with Role, Action, Context, and an Example if you have one.
  • 4
Review and refine Don't accept the first version. Ask Claude to make it more direct, shorter, or adjusted for a specific person. One or two follow-up prompts is normal.
  • 5
Use it this week Send the email. Publish the post. Present the summary. The habit only forms when you close the loop with real output.
Up next  ·  Phase 3
One win is a lucky break. A system is a competitive advantage.
Most people stop here. They use Claude occasionally, get decent results, and never go further. The people who actually change how they work don't just use Claude — they build it in. That's what Phase 3 is for.

Phase 3 — Build it in

Make it a system, not a session.

5 min read  ·  Turn occasional wins into a repeatable advantage

Using Claude once is a shortcut. Building it into your workflow is a competitive advantage. There's a significant difference between the two — and you're about to feel it.

Step 3.1

Build your personal AI playbook

When a prompt works, save it. Name it. A playbook is a living document of your best prompts — refined, reliable, and already proven for your specific context. When you need it next week, it's there.

Start with three categories:

Category 1

Communication prompts
Email drafts, follow-ups, client updates, difficult conversations. The ones you write most often.

Category 2

Research prompts
Summarise, compare, extract key points, sense-check data. The prompts that save you reading time.

Category 3

Creation prompts
Posts, reports, proposals, presentations. The prompts that eliminate the blank page.

The rule

If a prompt works twice, it earns a spot. By month three, you'll have a system that makes you faster every single week.

Step 3.2

What not to automate

Knowing where Claude belongs is as important as knowing how to use it. Some things should stay with you.

Don't hand Claude: Decisions that require human judgment. Performance conversations. Strategic calls. Relationship-defining moments. Anything going out under your name that you haven't read first.

Claude amplifies your judgment. It doesn't replace it. The goal is to take the grind off your plate so you can bring more of yourself to the work that actually requires you.

Step 3.3

The 30-day consistency habit

One task per day for 30 days. A practice, not a programme. This is how any skill builds — repetition, not intensity.

  • 1
Days 1–10: Experiment Try Claude on different task types from your audit. Some will land immediately. Some won't. Both tell you something useful.
  • 2
Days 11–20: Systematise The tasks that work — build prompts for them. Add them to your playbook. Notice where you reach for Claude without thinking. That's the habit forming.
  • 3
Days 21–30: Expand Pick one new area you haven't tried. Apply what you've learned. By day 30, you'll have found 3–5 things Claude does better than you expected.

The compound effect is real. Each prompt you save builds on the last. People who commit to 30 days come out the other side running a noticeably different business.

Up next  ·  Phase 4
Your playbook is started. The habit is mapped. Now the ceiling shows up.
There's a limit to how far you can go building alone. Phase 4 is where this becomes a sustained practice — with real workflows, a growing library, and people building alongside you.

Phase 4 — Go deeper

The foundation is set. Now go further.
